Kolkata, Sept. 3 -- The West Bengal government on Thursday launched a 72-hour cleanliness and vector-control drive, 'Swachhata Sankalp Abhiyan', aimed at keeping dengue at bay.
MoS for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Umesh Rai joined the drive in Howrah, sweeping roads at Kadamtala.
All 127 civic bodies were asked to undertake a 72-hour intensive cleaning campaign from September 3 to 5.
The drive targets garbage, stagnant water and mosquito-breeding sites ahead of the festive season, especially in dengue-prone areas. Hospitals were also disinfected with bleaching powder and fumigation, a health official said.
The directive, issued on Wednesday, asked for intensive source reduction and hotspot management across identified garbage dumps, water bodies and vacant plots. Civic bodies were asked to conduct special sanitation drives, clear blocked drains, remove roadside litter and unattended waste. Transport officials were asked to clean bus and tram depots, workshops and garages, with particular attention to scrap, discarded tyres and stagnant water.
