Kolkata, Sept. 25 -- The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee on Friday took out a protest march in Kolkata demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with the state unit also seeking his arrest.

Led by Congress leader Prakash Joshi and state Congress president Subhankar Sarkar, the march began at College Square and proceeded towards the office of the Chief Electoral Officer on Strand Road.

However, police stopped the march near the crossing of B B Ganguly Street and Chittaranjan Avenue. Congress workers and supporters staged a demonstration at the spot, raising slogans against Kumar.

Addressing the gathering, Sarkar alleged that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and West Bengal was being carried out in an "unscientific" manner.

"Rahul Gandhi had organised a movement alleging vote theft. After that, we saw that the method of vote theft changed. In Bihar and West Bengal, the voter lists were subjected to SIR through an unscientific process, deleting the names of lakhs of people and indirectly paving the way for the BJP to come to power," Sarkar said.
