Kolkata, July 10 -- The Calcutta High Court on Friday refused to grant an urgent hearing on a petition moved by Left leader Layek Ali, seeking protection from coercive action in connection with an FIR registered against him over alleged inflammatory remarks linked to protests following the Baruipur rape and murder case.
When the matter was mentioned before Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, the court directed the petitioner to move the case through the regular listing process, observing that it would be taken up in presentation form in due course.
Appearing for Ali, his counsel pressed for immediate intervention, claiming the CPM leader was facing threats of mob retaliation after he protested what was described as police inaction in the aftermath of the Baruipur incident.
The court, however, did not agree to hear the matter on an urgent basis, leaving the petitioner to pursue relief through the normal judicial process.
