Kolkata, Oct. 11 -- Baruipur East MAITC MLA Bibhas Sardar was allegedly assaulted with bricks and sticks by BJP-backed miscreants in Joynagar on Saturday, leaving him injured in the head and left eye. His security guard and driver were also reportedly attacked.

Condemning the incident, the Mamata All India Trinamool Congress (MAITC) accused the BJP of political intimidation, alleging that Sardar was targeted and threatened with death for supporting Mamata Banerjee. The party questioned the police's impartiality and demanded strict action against those responsible. According to Sardar, the incident took place when he was returning from his office. A group of people allegedly intercepted his car at Mansatala under Joynagar police station limits and asked him to step out before hurling bricks at him. He managed to escape from the spot.

However, his vehicle was allegedly intercepted again near Gaurberia Hat, where the assailants abused him and struck him on the head with bricks and sticks.

Sardar alleged that he was targeted for continuing to support Mamata Banerjee and for winning the Barui-pur East Assembly seat. In a statement, MAITC said the attack raised serious concerns about political violence and asserted that when political differences were answered with bricks and threats, "democracy itself is under attack".

The party also questioned whether the police would take action, alleging that they were more focused on serving their political masters than maintaining law and order.

The allegations against BJP-backed miscreants have been rejected by local BJP leaders.
