
Kolkata, Aug. 17 -- Eastern Railway's Sealdah Division celebrated the 164th anniversary of Barrackpore Railway Station with a 'Station Mahotsav' on Independence Day, highlighting the heritage and historical significance of the station.
Launched by the Ministry of Railways, Station Mahotsav aims to celebrate heritage stations across the country. More than 100 stations have been identified for such celebrations. Established in 1862, Barrackpore Station is among the oldest suburban stations in the country and has witnessed the transformation of Barrackpore from the colonial era to modern India.
The programme began with the unfurling of the National Flag by the Divisional Commercial Manager of Sealdah Division in the presence of railway officials and members of the Bharat Scouts & Guides. Chief Guest and MLA Koustav Bagchi highlighted Barrackpore's historical importance and contribution to India's freedom struggle.
School students recited poems on Independence and the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle. A video showcased the evolution of Barrackpore station, while Bharat Scouts & Guides staged a play depicting the struggle of Mangal Pandey and other freedom fighters.
Retired railway employees were also felicitated for their dedicated service. Eastern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Shibram Majhi described Barrackpore Station as a "living monument" to India's heritage and freedom struggle, saying the celebration aimed to pass its legacy to the next generation.
The programme concluded with the National Anthem.
