Kolkata, Aug. 17 -- The family of Sheikh Mohammed Mafik, who allegedly died after being assaulted in Bankura's Indas, has refused state compensation and instead sought a world-class school in his name, said Ashutosh Ranka, a CJP leader, who visited the grieving family on Monday.
Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also spoke to Hafiz, the son of the deceased, over the phone and assured him of support.
"Many of the attackers are still outside. We want all of them to be arrested," Ranka said, adding that all necessary legal sections should be invoked against the accused. He also demanded a court-monitored probe into the conduct of police personnel at Indas Police Station, alleging that the family had not received adequate support.
Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee separately spoke to Mafik's son Sheikh Abdul Hafiz over the phone and assured him of support. "We were with your family, we are with you and will remain with you," she told him. Hafiz told her that his phone containing important videos and audio recordings had been taken away. Banerjee advised him to bring the FIR and other documents to Kolkata and meet her.
CJP has placed four demands before the state: arrest all accused within 10 days and invoke all necessary legal provisions; order a court-monitored investigation into the alleged role of police personnel; ensure round-the-clock security for Mafik's family; and construct a world-class school named after Mafik, as the family does not want compensation.
The delegation also warned that CJP would gherao the district administration office if its demands were not met within ten days.
CPI(M) leaders Shatarup Ghosh and Mayukh Biswas accompanied the CJP delegation. Ghosh alleged BJP-linked persons were involved in the attack, a charge the BJP has denied.
