Kolkata, Sept. 8 -- A protest march by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) to the Bankura District Magistrate's office turned tense on Tuesday as demonstrators clashed with police several times amid heavy rain.
CJP workers had gathered at Tamlibandh Maidan before marching towards the DM's office. Police stopped them before they could reach the premises and put up barricades. Protesters then sat on the road, leading to scuffles with the police.
The protest was organised over the death of Sheikh Mafik, father of CJP worker Abdul Hafeez. On August 13, a group of miscreants allegedly attacked Hafeez's house in Karishunda village in Indas block and assaulted both Hafeez and his father.
Mafik later died while undergoing treatment at Burdwan Medical College.
CJP leaders had earlier demanded the arrest and strict punishment of all those involved, security for Hafeez's family and a school to be established in Sheikh Mafik's name. They had given the administration 10 days to act.
While security was later provided outside Hafeez's house, the other demands remain unfulfilled, the CJP alleged. The party therefore launched Tuesday's march and sit-in.
