Malda, Sept. 2 -- Thirty-one Bangladeshi nationals were arrested by Bengaluru Police during a crackdown on suspected illegal immigrants. They were brought to Malda late Tuesday night. The group arrived at Malda Town railway station aboard the Bengaluru Express and was subsequently taken to the Malda Holding Centre.
Among the 31 detainees are 17 men, 11 women and three children.
According to police sources, the group had been staying in different parts of Bengaluru for some time. They were allegedly unable to produce valid documents to establish their legal status in India.
The detainees were picked up during raids conducted by Bengaluru Police at different locations as part of a drive against suspected illegal immigration.
Following their detention, arrangements were made to bring them to Malda, from where they are expected to be handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) for deportation to Bangladesh, officials said. However, several details regarding their alleged entry into India remain unclear.
