Malda, Oct. 4 -- The controversy over alleged "egg therapy" against leaders of the Mamata All India Trinamool Congress (MAITC) has intensified in Malda, with the party's Bamangola block youth president Sujoy Saha allegedly being targeted with eggs at Pakuahat on Saturday evening.
The incident has triggered fresh political sparring in the area, coming days after a similar allegation involving a leader of the party's labour organisation. Allegations of police inaction have been raised. Despite court orders against such acts, the police have failed to check this. No arrests have been made yet.
According to local sources, the latest incident took place at around 7.30 pm at the Shyam Kali temple premises in Pakuahat. Saha was allegedly targeted with eggs while he was at the spot. A video purportedly showing the incident subsequently surfaced on social media.
The video carries the caption, "Egg therapy for corrupt MAITC leaders in Pakuahat, Part Two - Jai Shri Ram." The authenticity of the video and the circumstances in which it was recorded could not be independently verified by Millennium Post.
The latest allegation comes shortly after another egg-throwing incident reportedly involving MAITC-affiliated labour organisation leader Tinku Kundu in Pakuahat. Kundu was allegedly targeted with eggs following accusations related to land grabbing. After the incident, Kundu was admitted to Malda Medical College and Hospital.
MAITC leader Biswajit Ghosh said: "Such egg attacks are not our culture, whatever party he or she may be affiliated with. If the accused have done something wrong, police should take action as per law.
One should not take law into one's own hands..."
BJP leader Biswajit Roy attributed the incidents to alleged public anger against MAITC leaders.
