New Delhi, July 15 -- The Delhi government has decided to install a 15-foot-tall bronze statue of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the Azadpur roundabout in north Delhi as part of a wider plan to develop the site and improve public infrastructure.
According to officials, the bronze sculpture will weigh around 1,500 kg. The Public Works Department (PWD) has floated a tender to appoint an agency for designing, casting and installing the statue. The selected firm has been given a three-month timeline to complete the work. Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood said the project is intended as a tribute to Vajpayee's legacy and contribution to the country.
"Former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Atal Bihari Vajpayee was not only a distinguished leader but also a symbol of visionary leadership, good governance and politics driven by national interest. His life and ideals continue to inspire millions to serve the nation selflessly," Sood said.
He added that the memorial would preserve Vajpayee's legacy for future generations while also enhancing the surrounding public space. Along with the installation of the statue, the government has planned a comprehensive beautification of the Azadpur roundabout. The PWD will undertake landscaping, improve street lighting and carry out repairs to the nearby foot overbridge. Basic public amenities will also be developed as part of the project.
Sood said the site is being envisioned not only as a memorial but also as a place that offers convenience to visitors while reflecting the ideals associated with the former prime minister.
