Kolkata, Oct. 6 -- The West Bengal Health department on Monday cancelled the postgraduate admission of Dr Avik De, who had secured a seat in the MS (General Surgery) course at IPGME&R, Kolkata, in 2024 by allegedly making a fraudulent claim to eligibility under the service quota.

De was allegedly involved in the "threat culture" syndicate that surfaced during the RG Kar case.

The department directed the Director, IPGME&R, to remove De's name from the course and recover the prescribed penal amount from him.

De, a former RMO in Burdwan Medical College's Radiodiagnosis department and currently under suspension, came under scrutiny after the state set up an inquiry committee on August 5, 2026. The committee recommended cancellation of his admission after finding that he had fraudulently claimed the service-quota benefit, a recommendation later accepted by the competent authority.

The government order also noted that the tenure relaxation (TR) granted to De had already been cancelled through a separate order dated September 30.

Citing its 2010 order prescribing recovery of a penal sum in such cases, the government directed that the amount be recovered from De "as early as possible". An official said the move could have wider implications for scrutiny of service-quota claims in state-run medical postgraduate admissions.
