Raiganj, Sept. 29 -- A family of Daspara in North Dinajpur district has alleged that a gang of around 25 armed miscreants raided their house in the early hours of August 17 and seriously injured five members of the family. The victims have alleged that despite lodging a complaint, police have so far failed to arrest the accused.
Abdul Kader, a daily wage worker, along with other members of his family, met media persons at his residence on Monday afternoon and demanded immediate police action and security, claiming that the accused were threatening them with further attacks. According to Kader, the miscreants, allegedly led by Babar Ali and Idrish Alam, entered their house around midnight armed with firearms, iron rods and sharp weapons.
They allegedly attacked Kader, his three brothers and their elderly father with sharp weapons, causing serious injuries to their heads and hands. Kader claimed that one of the attackers pointed a firearm at his head, but the family members managed to snatch the weapon and hand it over to police. The injured persons were subsequently taken to a nursing home in Siliguri for treatment, according to the family. Kader further alleged that the attackers looted more than Rs 2 lakh in cash and gold ornaments from the house before fleeing.
The family lodged a complaint at Chopra police station following the incident. Kader alleged that some of the accused are known in the area for their alleged involvement in criminal activities and had previously been arrested by police and released on bail. He claimed that the attackers suspected the family of informing police about their activities.
Kader further alleged that the accused had subsequently threatened the family over telephone and warned them to withdraw the police complaint, failing which they would be killed. A senior police officer of Islampur Police District said that an investigation into the incident has been initiated.
