Kolkata, July 15 -- In a fresh development in the Baruipur mob lynching case, the Baruipur Police District arrested another person on Wednesday.
With the latest arrest, the total number of persons apprehended in the case has risen to eight.
The victim, identified as Indrajit Mondal, was dragged out of his house and allegedly beaten to death by a violent mob on suspicion of his involvement in the rape and murder of a minor girl at Suryapur in Baruipur.
However, during his first visit to Baruipur after the incident, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated that Indrajit was innocent. A few days later, Adhikari again visited Baruipur and met Indrajit's parents. The victim's elder brother was also appointed as a civic volunteer. Apart from this, the Chief Minister handed over a cheque for Rs 25 lakh to the family, while the local administration repaired their house, which had been vandalised by the mob.
It may be mentioned that local CPI(M) leader Lahek Ali was arrested a few days ago for his alleged involvement in the mob lynching, vandalism and other criminal activities.
However, local BJP leader Shantanu Mondal, against whom allegations had surfaced that he used his influence to facilitate the escape of one of the accused in the rape and murder case, has neither been questioned nor arrested by the police. Mpost
