New Delhi, Oct. 21 -- Jamia Millia Islamia has constituted a committee to draft the constitution of its students' union, nearly two decades after the body was dissolved in 2006, amid an ongoing student protest demanding the restoration of the union. The development comes as students continue their agitation, with a mass boycott of classes reported on campus.
The university issued a notification on Wednesday following discussions between its administration and protesting students. The committee, constituted under Article 23(J) and (K) of the Jamia Millia Islamia Act, 1988, will examine the circumstances surrounding the dissolution of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union (JMISU), relevant court rulings and the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee (2007).
The five-member committee will be chaired by Zubair Meenai, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Other members include Luqman Ahmad Khan, Dean of Life Sciences; Aslam Khan of the National Medical College and Hospital; Amarjeet Singh of the Centre for European and South Asian Studies; and Neelofar Afzal, Dean of Students' Welfare, who will convene the committee.
According to the university, a high-level committee constituted on October 18 held discussions with student representatives on October 20 to address their grievances. However, the students did not agree to sign the minutes of the meeting, despite further discussions.
The notification states that the committee will consult stakeholders, including students, and submit its draft by December 20. NSUI secretary Ebin Basil was hospitalised during his hunger strike. Students also seek disciplinary action revocation and the Chief Proctor's resignation.
