Kolkata, Sept. 21 -- Another worker of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), led by Nowda MLA Humayun Kabir, was arrested on Monday. Haidar Sheikh was arrested over allegations of indecent behaviour in front of Shaktipur Police Station during Kabir's dharna.
The arrest comes amid a series of police actions against AJUP functionaries ahead of the October 6 Rejinagar bypoll, where Kabir's son Golam Nabi Azad is the party's candidate. With Haidar's arrest, four AJUP-linked workers have been arrested in the recent sequence of cases: Haidar Sheikh, block leader Nasim Sheikh, and state secretary Ashiq Iqbal and another person, Bablu Sheikh, in the fake currency and arms case.
Kabir has alleged that his party workers are being "illegally arrested" one after another and has approached the Election Commission with a complaint. He had earlier accused the police of attempting to "loot" the vote and announced that AJUP would not campaign in Rejinagar, saying the party would instead face the situation on
polling day.Earlier, Ashiq Iqbal and Bablu Sheikh were arrested after police allegedly recovered 108 counterfeit Rs 500 notes, two firearms and four rounds of ammunition from their vehicle during a checking operation in Hariharpara.
Police said the source and intended use of the seized items were under investigation.
