NEW DELHI, May 21 -- A team of doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has developed an advanced spinal surgery approach that could significantly improve treatment outcomes for children suffering from severe scoliosis, a complex condition marked by abnormal curvature of the spine.
The research, led by senior orthopaedic spine surgeon Dr. Bhavuk Garg, focuses on improving surgical techniques for complicated spinal deformities that often affect children's posture, mobility, breathing capacity and overall physical development. According to specialists, severe scoliosis can progressively interfere with daily activities and reduce quality of life if not treated at an early stage.
The newly developed surgical method is aimed at making corrective spine procedures safer and more effective. Doctors believe the technique may help reduce complications associated with surgery and anaesthesia while also improving long-term recovery and spinal balance in young patients.
Medical experts noted that the innovation could minimise the need for repeated surgeries and support better lung development and physical growth among children affected by complex spinal conditions. The study has been published in an Indian spine journal and is being seen as a significant advancement in the field.
