Kolkata, May 13 -- A few hours after he was sworn in as an MLA at the West Bengal Assembly, the Chief Minister (CM) Suvendu Adhikari held a victory procession in Bhowanipore to express gratitude to voters on Wednesday evening. Earlier in the day, Adhikari also retained the Bhowanipore seat.

The procession was organised to thank the people for handing a resounding victory to Adhikari over former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Travelling in a hoodless car, Adhikari waved at party workers and residents of Bhowanipore, while also showering rose petals on the crowd during the roadshow.

Adhikari had instructed party workers to ensure the procession caused no inconvenience to the public. During his campaign, he had offered prayers at temples in Bhowanipore and Kalighat. In the 2026 Assembly polls, the BJP secured a landslide victory, with Adhikari defeating Mamata Banerjee by over 15,000 votes in her stronghold.

Bhowanipore has remained closely associated with Banerjee for years and has been viewed as a symbol of Trinamool Congress dominance in Kolkata.

After losing to Adhikari in Nandigram during the 2021 Assembly elections, Banerjee had successfully contested the Bhowanipore by-poll to return as Chief Minister.
