Kolkata, Sept. 16 -- 'The scar tells you I've been through something. The eyes tell you I'm nowhere near done!' TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee posted this message on Instagram along with a close-up picture of his eye, amid the political turmoil surrounding him and his party.
Banerjee is currently in the US for eye treatment after receiving permission from the Supreme Court. The picture showed a visible scar below his eye, with his caption appearing to underline his resilience despite the challenges he has faced. Banerjee had suffered a serious eye injury in a road accident in 2016 and has undergone multiple surgeries for the condition, including treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the US.
The post came amid mounting political pressure on Banerjee, with his name figuring in several ongoing legal matters after the regime change in West Bengal.
BJP Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul questioned Banerjee's decision to seek treatment abroad. Referring to the healthcare infrastructure developed during the previous government's tenure, she asked why, after 15 years in power and claims of having 42 super-speciality hospitals, he needed to travel abroad for treatment. She said this exposes how the health care system has declined in the previous regime.
Ritabrata Banerjee also took a swipe at Abhishek over his foreign visit, questioning why a villa in New Jersey was reportedly needed for eye treatment.
