GURUGRAM, April 15 -- Two sanitation workers died, and another is in critical condition after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a sewer here, police said on Wednesday.
Ferozepur Jhirka Municipality workers were cleaning a sewer near Ambedkar Chowk on NH-248A when the incident occurred around 10 pm on Tuesday, they added.
According to the police, when the first worker did not come out for a long time, a second worker entered the sewer to check on him, but also failed to return. Following this, the worried workers sent a third worker down, who began screaming and alerted others at the site.
A rescue operation using a JCB machine pulled out all three workers; however, two of them had already died.
The third worker was rushed to Al Afia Civil Hospital in Mandi Kheda, where he remains in critical condition, the police said.
Efforts are underway to ascertain the identities of the victims. A senior police officer said the contractor has been absconding since the incident. Initial investigations suggest the accident occurred due to inhaling toxic gas, he said. A probe is underway.
