Kolkata, Oct. 11 -- Jurist and activist Prashant Bhushan on Sunday called for greater accountability of government and police officials for protection of democratic rights.

Bhushan said sustained public resistance was needed to protect democratic rights and uphold the rights enshrined in Indian Constitution.

He argued that injustice would persist unless those responsible for abuses of power were punished.

Speaking at a conference organised by the Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR), Bhushan alleged that officials

often escaped consequences for filing false cases and carrying out illegalities.

He expressed concern over the erosion of institutional independence, accusing the BJP-led Centre of compromising key institutions, including the judiciary, media and the Comptroller and Auditor General.

Bhushan flagged alleged instances of mob violence in Bengal, claiming that police were either passive or actively involved in such incidents.

He said public mobilisation was essential when constitutional institutions failed to ensure accountability.

His remarks came days after his detention in Delhi while participating in protests demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation over alleged electoral irregularities by deleting names through SIR .
