Kolkata, June 8 -- Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday strongly condemned the death of party worker Mihir Ghosh from East Burdwan, alleging that the incident reflected a growing culture of political violence and lawlessness in West Bengal.
In a statement on social media, Banerjee claimed that Ghosh had been dragged out of his home, publicly humiliated and brutally assaulted by miscreants allegedly backed by the BJP. Describing the incident as "state-sponsored political violence," he said the death had robbed a family of their loved one and raised serious questions about public safety.
"Another death. Another injustice," Banerjee wrote, alleging that rising violence, growing insecurity among ordinary citizens and a culture of mob justice were becoming defining features of the state. He questioned how many more lives would be lost before those responsible were held accountable. The reaction came hours after Ghosh died on Sunday from injuries allegedly sustained in an assault eight days earlier.
Ghosh, president of the Mongolkot TMC area committee, was reportedly summoned from his home on May 30 to attend a kangaroo court over a dispute concerning the accounts of a local Durga Puja committee.
An argument allegedly escalated into a mob assault, leaving him critically injured.
Meanwhile, in connection with the case related to the forgery of signatures of several TMC MLAs, the CID on Monday again summoned Abhishek to appear on Tuesday after failing to be present before the sleuths on Monday.
