Kolkata, July 10 -- The Suvendu Adhikari government is keen on conducting civic body elections within December this year and necessary preparations in this regard were being initiated to ensure "uniformed representation" by the virtue of implementing delimitations.

Elections are due in various civic bodies in the state and in many places administrators have been appointed to carry out the responsibilities of the civic authorities. After the BJP came to power, in many civic bodies, the chairmen or mayors have already resigned. In the case of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), former Mayor Firhad Hakim had also resigned.

It was learnt that attempts were being made to hold the elections during November-December. The delimitations would also be carried out prior to the elections. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently announced the elections to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will be held within six months and also stressed the necessity of delimitations in Kolkata and seat rationalisations. Adhikari also hinted that civic body elections might occur in December.

"By December this year, the civic body will be handed over to the elected representatives through elections. KMC services are like emergency services. Elections will be conducted by the first week of December," Adhikari told reporters at the KMC headquarters on the sidelines of the launch of "Swachhta Se Swagat," last month.

The Chief Minister had also stated that his government wanted the previous ruling party to prove two third majority in KMC and form the new board after the Mayor resigned. But the TMC could not decide on who will be the Mayor, he had added.

State Labour minister who is also in charge of the Transport department held a meeting with administrators in Bhatpara municipality where he said that many civic chairman have resigned and hence the civic services are being hampered. He also stated that elections will be held in the civic bodies in November.
