Kolkata, Oct. 2 -- The Calcutta High Court will hear on October 12 Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh's plea seeking protection, after his counsel told the court that the Beleghata MLA faced a threat to his life following alleged attacks over the weekend.

Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya reportedly assured Ghosh's lawyer that the matter would be taken up on an "urgent basis" on the scheduled date.

Ghosh had approached the high court earlier this week, seeking directions to the authorities to take necessary steps for his safety. His counsel alleged that Ghosh was targeted on two consecutive days while travelling to political programmes.

According to the allegations placed before the court, Ghosh was attacked in Uttarpara on Saturday. The following day, he was allegedly pursued by bikers while travelling towards Narkeldanga Bridge.

His lawyer claimed that a group intercepted him, grabbed him by his collar and threatened him, with one of the men allegedly carrying a firearm. Police have registered a Zero FIR covering allegations, including kidnapping, wrongful restraint, assault with dangerous weapons, criminal intimidation and common intention. The FIR also invokes provisions of the Arms Act.
