Kolkata, Sept. 28 -- The Calcutta High Court on Monday asked the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) appellate tribunal to decide within two weeks four appeals filed by Hajj pilgrims whose names were removed from the electoral rolls.

Justice Krishna Rao passed the direction after the pilgrims told the court that they had been selected for the pilgrimage but were facing difficulties obtaining their passports and visas following the deletion of their names during the SIR exercise.

The petitioners said the visa process for their October 7 pilgrimage was due to begin shortly, making an early decision on their appeals necessary.

Their challenges to the deletion of their names are already pending before the appellate tribunals.

Appearing for the Election Commission, counsel submitted that the appeals could be considered by the concerned tribunal in accordance with law once the petitioners approached it.
