India, June 27 -- A man, presumed dead by his family who even had performed his last rites and 'terahvi', has returned home in Ghaziabad. The turn of events has prompted police to reopen the investigation into a case where the body was misidentified. According to the police, Girdhar Singh Bisht, a resident of Kalpana Apartment in Vaishali, was arrested on May 16 for allegedly disturbing the peace following a dispute with local shopkeepers. He was released from Dasna Jail on bail on May 21, but did not return home. After failing to trace him, his family lodged a complaint at the Masuri police station. Following a postmortem, the police registered a murder case against six accused on the family's complaint. The body was handed over to the family, who performed the last rites and the 'terahvi' ceremony on June 24. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Indirapuram, Abhishek Srivastava, said Bisht returned to his house at around 5 am on Thursday. "He is being questioned to ascertain where he was during this period and under what circumstances he returned home. The matter is being investigated from all angles," Srivastava said. The ACP said the unidentified body had undergone a postmortem, which cited drowning as the cause of death. "Following Bisht's return, the police have reopened the investigation to establish the identity of the recovered body and verify all facts related to the case. The probe into the murder case registered against the six accused is also being reviewed in light of the latest developments," the officer said.
