New Delhi, Sept. 1 -- As onion prices threaten to pinch household budgets, the Centre is stepping in with 1,000 metric tonnes of the essential kitchen staple for Delhi, with the government set to sell it at Rs 35 per kg through fair price shops and mobile vans across all 13 districts. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the move is aimed at ensuring that a shortage does not develop and onions remain within the reach of ordinary consumers.
The onions will be distributed through fair price shops at the fixed rate of Rs 35 per kg. To widen access, the Delhi government will also deploy one van in each of the capital's 13 districts.
The vans will move through different areas, particularly locations where residents may have limited access to fair price shops.
The government said the arrangement is intended to increase the availability of affordable onions across Delhi and ensure that the benefit reaches a larger number of consumers.
Gupta said the government was closely monitoring onion prices and availability in the capital and would take all necessary measures to prevent a shortage.
