Indore, Sept. 2 -- The Congress on Wednesday said that party leader Rahul Gandhi's 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' event, scheduled for September 12 in Indore, has been postponed to September 19 due to denial of permission to hold the programme at a city-based stadium.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rejected the Congress' argument, saying that under an old order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, only sports activities or state-level government events are permitted at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
While the Opposition party accused the BJP of denying permission as it was "scared" of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's upcoming event, the saffron party hit back, saying the grand old party was giving excuses in order to hide its failure to draw people to the programme.
State Congress president Jitu Patwari said that after the state government refused to provide the Nehru Stadium, the 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' event will now be held on September 19 instead of September 12.
Making an announcement during a meeting regarding preparations for the event in Indore, he said the Congress will now find a new venue and make arrangements accordingly.
The Congress is trying to mobilise 50,000 students from Indore and surrounding areas for the 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' programme.
