BALURGHAT, June 8 -- After taking initiatives to improve railway connectivity in South Dinajpur, Union Minister of State for Education & Development of North-East Region and Balurghat Lok Sabha MP Sukanta Majumdar has now intensified efforts to introduce air services in the district, a long-standing demand of residents.

On Monday, Majumdar held a crucial meeting in New Delhi with Union Civil Aviation minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu. During the meeting, he strongly raised the issue of operationalising Balurghat Airport and launching regular air services connecting South Dinajpur with other parts of the country.

Majumdar has been actively pursuing several developmental projects for the district. Ahead of the Assembly elections, he had made a number of commitments regarding the region's infrastructure and overall development. Soon after the formation of the new government, he took steps to advance the process of establishing a medical college in South Dinajpur through discussions with the state government. The latest initiative on air connectivity is being seen as another significant move towards fulfilling those promises.

Residents of the district have long complained that despite repeated demands, no effective steps were taken in the past to start air services from Balurghat. As a result, the dream of improved air connectivity remained unfulfilled for years. The issue has gained renewed attention following Majumdar's direct intervention at the Centre.

Speaking after the meeting, Majumdar expressed optimism about the proposal. "The matter of introducing air services from Balurghat is being considered positively and good news may come soon," he said.

The development has generated hope among residents, who believe that the introduction of air services would significantly improve connectivity, boost economic activities, and open new avenues for the growth of South Dinajpur. If implemented, the project is expected to mark a major milestone in the district's infrastructural development and strengthen its links with the rest of the country.
