KUCHING, July 6 -- Police are investigating an incident involving a man who allegedly assaulted a woman in front of a rental room at Metrocity Matang here last Friday.

Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed that a report on the incident, which was said to have occurred at around 8pm, was received the following day.

"Preliminary investigations suggest the incident is believed to have stemmed from a dispute between the victim (woman) and the male suspect.

"The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, which carries a penalty of imprisonment for up to one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, if convicted," he said in a statement.
