KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 -- Police say an automotive college that hired a man now suspected of molesting and sodomising two teenage students did not carry out a background check before employing him.

According to the New Straits Times, initial investigations found the college had failed to verify whether the employee had a criminal record.

"As a result, the college was unaware that the individual had a record involving sexual offences," district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sarudin Samah said.

Sarudin said police will record statements from the college's management to assist the investigation.

He said the suspect had worked at the college for about two years.
