Penang Port Commission says ferry ridership up 7pc in first half of 2026, announces free Merdeka rides
GEORGE TOWN, Aug. 22 -- Penang's ferry services recorded a 7.28 per cent increase in passenger traffic between January and June this year compared to the same period in 2025.
Penang Port Commission chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said that passenger volume in June alone reached 262,424. This total comprised 199,861 pedestrians, 61,941 motorcyclists, and 622 cyclists.
"These figures clearly reflect the sustained demand for ferry services as a key mode of public transportation in the state," Yeoh said in a statement today.
To further encourage the use of public transit, the commission announced that passengers will be granted free ferry rides during the upcoming Merdeka celebrations.
