On 1 August 2026, Purja's company Elite Expeditions confirmed the elite mountaineer's tragic death, following an avalanche on Broad Peak. Also known as Nimsdai, Purja was among the 10 climbers who died during the climbing expedition on the mountain situated in Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan.
