India, Oct. 7 -- A symbol of marital status, the vermilion sindoor is a common feature of the traditional Indian woman's attire. Worn as an announcement of marriage, it is often considered a symbol of longevity, adopted by the wife for her husband's life. While the sindoor holds a very specific meaning in Hinduism, it has had its moments in contemporary art and, of course, in the movies.
From the vermilion streak worn by the iconic Rekha, which she continues to flaunt even today, to the oft-repeated dialogue delivered by Shanti Priya, played by Deepika Padukone, in Om Shanti Om, the "ek chutki sindoor" carries weight well beyond its original meaning.
