New Delhi, Aug. 19 -- India has significantly expanded its photovoltaic (PV) module and cell manufacturing capacity in recent years, but gaps in upstream production continue to leave the industry dependent on imports for key components, according to NITI Aayog.

The report said India's solar manufacturing industry remains concentrated largely in the cell and module segments, with module manufacturing capacity listed under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) rising sharply to around 100 GW in August 2025 from about 2.3 GW in 2014, ANI reported.

Despite this expansion, India continues to rely on imports for solar cells and modules, while domestic capacity for manufacturing wafers and polysilicon remains limited.
