New Delhi, Sept. 2 -- India has significantly narrowed its gap with advanced automotive markets on vehicle standards and is now only two to three years behind in some areas, while matching or exceeding global benchmarks in several others, Mahmood Ahmed, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), said.

Speaking at the 8th FADA Auto Retail Conclave 2026 in New Delhi, Ahmed said India was around a decade behind markets such as Western Europe and Japan on vehicle standards 10-15 years ago, reported Economic Times.

Sustained engagement with global automotive ecosystems has helped India accelerate convergence with international standards, he said.
