Afghanistan, June 12 -- The 2026 FIFA World Cup begins on Thursday with opening ceremonies in Mexico, Canada and the United States, launching the largest tournament in the competition's history.
The opening ceremony in Mexico City will feature performances by Shakira and Burna Boy ahead of the opening match between Mexico and South Africa at the historic Estadio Azteca. FIFA said the ceremony will also include several artists featured on the tournament's official album.
The 2026 edition is the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, expanding from the previous 32-team format used since 1998. It is also the first time the tournament is being jointly hosted by three countries; United States, Mexico and Canada.
