Afghanistan, May 31 -- The World Health Organization (WHO) marked World No Tobacco Day by calling for stronger efforts to protect people in Afghanistan from the health risks associated with tobacco use, warning that the tobacco industry continues to use deceptive marketing tactics to attract consumers.

In a statement released on Sunday, WHO Afghanistan said the tobacco industry often hides the deadly consequences of smoking behind misleading advertising, attractive packaging and flavored products designed to appeal to young people. The agency urged communities to strengthen smoke-free environments and promote healthier lifestyles.
