Afghanistan, May 23 -- Authorities in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo have imposed strict public health measures, including bans on funeral ceremonies, suspension of football matches and limits on public gatherings to 50 people, as part of efforts to contain an Ebola outbreak.
The decision was taken after clashes between residents and police in the city of Rwampara, while local officials in Ituri Province said only trained medical teams are now allowed to handle burials, with transport of bodies by non-medical vehicles also prohibited.
The World Health Organization has classified the spread of the rare "BundiBujyo" Ebola strain as a global public health emergency, warning of a rapidly evolving situation in the region.
