Afghanistan, June 6 -- More than 17 million people in Afghanistan are expected to face severe food insecurity in 2026, while nearly 5 million mothers and children are projected to suffer from malnutrition, the World Food Programme (WFP) said, warning that the country remains one of the world's worst hunger crises.

In a report released on Friday, the U.N. agency said an estimated 17.4 million people in Afghanistan will experience acute food insecurity next year. The organization also warned that 4.9 million mothers and children are expected to be affected by malnutrition, describing the situation as the most severe malnutrition crisis ever recorded in the country.
