Afghanistan, July 5 -- Uzbekistan's State Security Service said it had foiled an attempt to smuggle narcotics from Afghanistan using a drone, in what authorities described as the first publicly reported cross-border drug trafficking operation involving an unmanned aircraft along the two countries' frontier.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the agency said border guards and police intercepted the drone in Surkhandarya region near the Amu Darya River before it crossed into Uzbek territory. Authorities said they seized about 2.03 kilograms of opium attached to the aircraft and opened a criminal investigation into the incident.
