Afghanistan, May 26 -- US forces carried out strikes in southern Iran targeting missile launch sites and boats allegedly linked to mine-laying operations, according to reports by Fox News citing US military officials.

The report quoted Tim Hawkins as saying the attacks were conducted in "self-defense" to protect American forces from threats posed by Iranian-backed activities in the region.

According to US Central Command, the targeted sites included missile positions and Iranian boats that US officials said were preparing maritime mining operations near strategic waterways.

At the same time, CENTCOM said American forces continue to act with "restraint" despite ongoing tensions and the fragile ceasefire environment in the region.
