Afghanistan, May 3 -- UNESCO said free and reliable journalism plays a central role in building peaceful societies, marking World Press Freedom Day with a call to protect independent media worldwide.

The agency stressed that access to verified and trustworthy information is not optional but essential for creating just, resilient, and informed communities.

It warned that manipulated information fuels division and erodes public trust, undermining social cohesion and democratic values across societies.

UNESCO added that free and honest information strengthens accountability, promotes dialogue, and supports the protection of fundamental human rights globally.
