Afghanistan, June 11 -- The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has expressed deep concern over the detention of at least 30 women in Herat and the reported use of excessive force against protesters in the western Afghanistan city.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, UNAMA said the women were detained on June 6 and 7 by Taliban morality police for allegedly failing to comply with the group's dress code requirements. The mission said dozens of other women received warnings during the operation.
Although the women were released on June 8, UNAMA said arbitrary detentions can have lasting consequences for women and their families, increasing the risk of social isolation, stigma and violence even after their release.
