Afghanistan, Aug. 18 -- Sima Bahous, executive director of UN Women, said the exclusion of women and girls in Afghanistan must never be normalised, stressing that their rights are "not negotiable" as Afghanistan marks five years since the Taliban returned to power.

Bahous made the remarks on Monday, August 17, in a post on X, saying UN Women stands with Afghanistan women and girls in defending their rights, dignity and voices.

Her comments come as Afghan women and girls continue to face sweeping restrictions under Taliban rule. Girls remain barred from secondary schools and universities, while women face severe restrictions on employment, freedom of movement and participation in public life.
