Afghanistan, June 28 -- The United Nations has called for an independent investigation into dozens of deaths in the custody of United States immigration authorities, urging Washington to take immediate steps to prevent further fatalities in detention facilities.

The appeal follows growing concern over a rise in deaths involving migrants held by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, with the UN warning that conditions in detention centers could amount to serious human rights violations if left unaddressed.
