Afghanistan, June 17 -- U.S. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for an Afghan former commando accused of killing a National Guard soldier and seriously wounding another service member in Washington, D.C.

U.S. federal prosecutors said on Tuesday they would pursue capital punishment against Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national charged in the November 2025 shooting that killed a member of the West Virginia National Guard and critically injured another soldier.

Lakanwal appeared before a federal court in Washington and pleaded not guilty to a new 17-count indictment, including premeditated murder of a National Guard member, attempted murder, assault with intent to kill, and firearms-related offenses. If convicted on the ...
