Afghanistan, March 22 -- The Qatar Ministry of Defence said a military helicopter crashed early Sunday while carrying out a routine patrol mission over territorial waters.

In an official statement, the ministry said the aircraft experienced a sudden technical malfunction during flight, forcing it to lose control.

The helicopter went down in the sea within Qatari waters, with authorities describing the mission as part of regular surveillance operations.

Search and rescue teams were immediately deployed to the site, with efforts ongoing to locate and assist the crew.

Officials have not yet disclosed how many people were onboard or provided updates on casualties, as investigations continue.
