Afghanistan, Aug. 10 -- Afghanistan is facing mounting humanitarian and economic pressures as more than six million Afghans have returned from neighbouring countries since late 2023, with 73% of returnees unemployed, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said.
Jan Egeland, secretary-general of the NRC, said Monday, August 10, that the scale of returns was placing additional pressure on communities already struggling with poverty, unemployment and limited access to basic services.
We are increasingly left alone in the face of growing needs and shrinking rights for girls and women across Afghanistan, Egeland said, accusing NATO member states of failing to maintain sufficient support for Afghan civilians.
