Afghanistan, April 30 -- Malala Yousafzai has called on the international community to step up support for Afghan women and push for the recognition of "gender apartheid" under international law, following talks with John Swinney.

Speaking on Wednesday, Yousafzai said Afghan women and girls have endured nearly five years of severe restrictions under Taliban rule, warning that much of the world has "looked away" despite worsening conditions. She highlighted bans on girls' education and women's employment, saying many face punishment simply for appearing in public or seeking to study.
