Afghanistan, Aug. 19 -- Former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, marking Afghanistan's Independence Day, said preserving the country's independence and turning it into a foundation for progress require lasting peace and stability, national unity, education and greater reliance on domestic capabilities.

In a message marking the anniversary, Karzai paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in Afghanistan's struggle for freedom and independence, saying their sacrifices remain a source of pride for the people of Afghanistan.

Karzai said achieving independence was valuable, but maintaining it and benefiting from it required Afghanistan to become a stronger country capable of relying on its own human and national resources.
